Zodiac sign poster: Where do our constellations come from?

Before designing our zodiac art prints, we also explored the origins of constellations: Originally, the signs of the zodiac in astrology referred to twelve equal sections, also called zodiacs, into which the sky was divided, similar to a coordinate system. These sections were named after the twelve constellations that were visible in these parts of the sky over 2000 years ago.

Back then, they were used to mark important events in the course of the year, such as the time for sowing or harvesting. As early as the second millennium BC, a day-selection calendar was used in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, which incorporated fixed stars and constellation-like groups.

With the development of the Greek four-element theory, the zodiac signs were later supplemented by the assignment to the elements fire, water, air and earth.

Around the 2nd century BC, it was discovered that the constellations in the sky gradually shifted relative to the signs of the zodiac, meaning that the constellations and the months of the year no longer corresponded exactly. Consequently, in late antiquity, it was decided to define the signs of the zodiac independently of the constellations.
