Zodiac Wall Murals: The Origin of Our Constellations

Originally, in astrology, the signs of the zodiac were assigned to twelve equally sized sections, also known as zodiacs. These sections served to divide the sky similarly to a coordinate system.

They were named after the twelve constellations that were visible in these parts of the sky over 2000 years ago. At that time, they were used to mark important events in the course of the year, such as the best time for sowing and harvesting.

With the development of the Greek theory of the four elements, the zodiac signs were later additionally associated with the elements of fire, water, air, and earth. Around the 2nd century BC, it was recognized that the constellations in the sky gradually shifted relative to the zodiac signs.

As a result, the constellations no longer corresponded exactly to the months of the year. In response, it was decided in late antiquity to define the signs of the zodiac independently of the constellations, and the 12 signs of the zodiac that we know today, and which are accordingly immortalized on our zodiac art prints, became established.
