Who was Hieronymus Bosch?

Hieronymus Bosch is considered one of the most important Dutch artists. He came from a family that produced many painters. However, Hieronymus Bosch's original name was Jheronimus van Aken. He was born around 1450 in the city of 's-Hertogenbosch (or simply "Bosch") in what is now the southern Netherlands. He adopted his artist's name to emphasize his origins and increase his fame. Bosch was born around 1450 and died in August 1516.

Thus, his paintings belong to the Late Gothic and Renaissance periods – a fascinating era between the Late Middle Ages and the Early Modern period, which brought about significant changes between church and society.
